Adolescent Apprenticeships

Mondays in July: 2, 9, 16, 23, 30
9:00 – 4:00 p.m.
Space is limited to five people, ages 14+
Cost: $65 each Monday OR $300 for all five sessions

The adolescent apprenticeship is designed to teach life skills: problem solving, materials acquisition and handling, prioritizing time, managing risks, and basic tool skills.

Safety on the farm is the first priority.

Apprentices are treated with respect as capable and contributing participants in the decisions, outcomes, and consequences of choices.

The process of thinking and working collaboratively is at the center of our work together.

The demands are physical and each apprentice should arrive expecting to work hard wearing appropriate clothing and footwear. Participants need to bring work gloves, a substantial lunch, and a water bottle.

Last year’s participants learned the names of most hand tools, used some power tools under direct supervision, and accomplished a great deal!

After an orientation to the woodshop, farm equipment, layout of the facility, and a needs assessment of the farm, tasks will include:

  • Irrigation systems repair and improvement
  • Garden management
  • Construction and salvage of structures
  • Work in the greenhouse
  • Animal handling
  • Woodworking essentials
